‘Not everything requires the President’s direct involvement” – George Ayisi reacts to the rise of Galamsey under NPP Gov’t

In a recent discussion on Kessben TV’s Maakye hosted by Kwame Appiah Kubi, George Ayisi, a spokesperson for the NPP, responded to criticisms of the government’s handling of illegal mining, known as Galamsey by Hon. Mathias Kwame Ntow.

Ayisi defended the government’s approach and highlighted the complexities of the issue, emphasizing that expecting the president to personally manage every aspect of the fight against galamsey is unrealistic.”

He praised President Nana Addo Danquah for his vigorous efforts against galamsey, noting that no previous government has matched this level of commitment.

“The vigour that Nana Addo Danquah used in fighting galamsey is commendable, and no government has ever done that.”

Addressing criticisms from Hon. Mathias Kwame Ntow, Ayisi pointed out that while the president’s dedication is important, not every detail requires his direct involvement. He remarked,

“Why do we have state agencies, the StopGalamsey teams, and others? As he is an MP, doesn’t he do everything by himself? No. He has a team that supports him in his work. That is how it is. Not everything requires the president’s direct involvement before we can fight this fight.”

Ayisi also criticized opposition claims that they would release galamsey suspects if they came to power.

He said, “If the main opposition leader campaigns on a platform that promises to release galamsey suspects currently in custody, it undermines our efforts.” He cited past incidents where similar promises were made, which he argued had only hindered progress.

Mr. Ayisi also took a direct swipe at Hon. Ntow by referring to his own record during his tenure as MP. He questioned,

“When you were an MP for Aowin, wasn’t galamsey ongoing in the constituency? Make them face these realities honestly.” This pointed critique reflects his view that, the past leaders also struggled with the issue and that current efforts should be supported rather than undermined.

Mr. Ayisi recalled the challenges faced by the previous government, NDC in their fight on glamsey. He noted,

“When President Mahama started the galamsey fight, Hon. Inusah Fuseini was the spearhead. Yet, when faced with significant challenges, even seasoned leaders like Samuel Sarpong and Inusah Fuseini threw up their hands in frustration.

As Ghana continues to struggle with the issue of galamsey, George Ayisi’s remarks serve as a reminder of the complexities involved and the need for a collaborative approach.

His defense of the government’s efforts and his call for a united front reflect the ongoing struggle to effectively address this pressing issue.
