WICA Foundation Launches in Accra to Empower Ghanaian Women in Creativity
The 2024 Women in Creativity Africa (WICA) Foundation was officially launched today, marking a significant milestone in the journey to bridge the gender gap in the creative industry. Under the theme “Bridging Borders, Breaking Barriers,” WICA aims to address the pressing issue of women’s underrepresentation in creative professions.
*A Catalyst for Change*
Speaking at the launch, Mrs. Sandra Oquaye, Co-Founder and CEO of WICA Foundation, emphasized the organization’s mission to nurture, empower, and celebrate the resilience, talent, and innovation of creative African women. “Our goal is to serve as a catalyst for transformative change in their lives and careers,” she stated.
*Breaking Down Systemic Barriers*
Oquaye highlighted the universal power of creativity, noting that it transcends borders, languages, and backgrounds. However, she pointed out that systemic barriers have disproportionately impacted women of color in creative professions in Africa and beyond.
*The Four Pillars of WICA*
To achieve its objectives, WICA Foundation is built on four core pillars:
1. *Education*: Providing tuition-free education and financial support for 50 African women pursuing creative careers each year.
2. *Mentorship*: Pairing emerging talent with industry experts for guidance and support.
3. *Networking*: Creating opportunities for collaboration and connection among creative women.
4. *Showcasing*: Celebrating and promoting the work of African women in creativity.
*Empowering Creative African Women*
WICA Foundation’s launch marks a significant step towards empowering Ghanaian women in creativity. By addressing the systemic barriers and providing support, WICA aims to unlock the full potential of creative African women, driving transformative change in the industry.
