Denmark Strengthens Gulf of Guinea Maritime Security with “Ship-in-a-box” Training Facility

In a bold move to enhance maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, Denmark has officially commissioned a state-of-the-art training facility in Ghana. The “Ship-in-a-box” (SIAB) training facility, funded by Denmark, aims to boost the capacity of military and civilian maritime security agencies in the region to combat maritime crime.

On August 15, 2024, Danish Foreign Affairs Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Ambassador Tøm Norring joined Ghana’s Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, Ghana Navy representatives, and UNODC officials to launch the facility at the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) in Ghana.

The SIAB training facility is a key component of the Danish Gulf of Guinea Maritime Security Programme (DMSP III), which seeks to improve maritime security in the region. The facility will provide specialized training in maritime crime interdiction and investigations, enabling regional security agencies to effectively address the evolving threats in the Gulf of Guinea.

Minister Rasmussen reiterated Denmark’s commitment to supporting regional efforts to secure the Gulf of Guinea, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and capacity building. He encouraged maritime security stakeholders to fully utilize the SIAB facility to make the region’s maritime domain safe and secure.

The commissioning of the SIAB training facility marks a significant milestone in the quest for enhanced maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. With Denmark’s support, the region is poised to make strides in combating maritime crime and ensuring the safety of its waters.
