Ghana Refutes Claims Of Strained Ties With Burkina Faso

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has dismissed allegations made by former President John Mahama, suggesting that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s recent engagements with the US Government have caused “diplomatic tension” between Ghana and Burkina Faso.

NO EVIDENCE OF DIPLOMATIC TENSION

The Ministry states that these claims are “wholly unfounded and lack any substantial evidence or merit.” It emphasizes that Ghana’s diplomatic efforts under President Akufo-Addo have consistently aimed to foster constructive and respectful relations with all nations, including Burkina Faso.

STRENGTH OF GHANA-BURKINA FASO RELATIONS

The Ministry highlights several examples of cooperation between the two countries, including:

  • A ministerial visit to Burkina Faso in December 2022 and a presidential visit in 2023, which reinforced commitments to building stronger bonds.
  • Collaboration on border-related matters through a joint border commission.
  • Cooperation in power generation between SONABEL and ECG.
  • Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority’s presence in Burkina Faso to facilitate trade.
  • Regular exchanges between the Chamber of Commerce of both countries.
  • A Burkinabe delegation’s visit to Ghana in July 2024 to learn from Ghana’s forensic science and police laboratory expertise.
Ghana remains a preferred destination for Burkinabe students to learn English.

COMMITMENT TO CORDIAL RELATIONS

The Ministry reaffirms Ghana’s commitment to maintaining cordial and productive diplomatic relationships with Burkina Faso, guided by mutual respect and cooperation. It urges focus on building bridges and strengthening ties rather than spreading falsehoods that undermine international cooperation.
