Graphic and WFP Unite to Revolutionize Agriculture in Ghana

Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have joined forces to transform agriculture productivity in Ghana. The collaboration aims to reduce post-harvest losses, enhance smallholder farmer incomes, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Education: The Key to Transformation

Ato Afful, Managing Director of GCGL, emphasized the critical need for education on improved farming methods, efficient harvesting, and better transportation and storage solutions. “The transformation we seek must stem from education,” he stressed. “We need to educate farmers on best practices, from planting to harvesting, transportation, storage, and value addition.”

Addressing Post-Harvest Losses

Post-harvest losses pose a significant challenge to Ghana’s agricultural sector, resulting in economic losses for smallholder farmers. Mr. Afful highlighted the importance of addressing this issue, stating, “While improving yields per acreage is crucial, reducing post-harvest losses is equally vital to ensure investments in agriculture translate into real benefits for farmers.”

Public-Private Partnerships: The Way Forward

The GCGL-WFP partnership demonstrates the power of public-private collaborations in driving national development. Mr. Afful emphasized, “Public-private partnerships are essential in addressing national issues and enhancing agricultural productivity.”

Empowering Smallholder Farmers

The initiative focuses on empowering smallholder farmers, who are the backbone of Ghana’s agricultural sector. By providing education, training, and support, the partnership aims to:

  1. Improve farming methods and practices
  2. Enhance harvesting and transportation efficiency
  3. Develop adequate storage facilities
  4. Promote value addition through processing, packaging, and marketing

Transforming Agriculture Productivity

The Graphic Business meeting, held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, brought together stakeholders from the agricultural sector, government, and private industry. The event highlighted the need for collective action to transform agriculture productivity in Ghana.
