Empowering Hawkers: Traffic Hawkers Association Launches Comprehensive Program
In a bid to revolutionize the lives of hawkers, the Traffic Hawkers Association has rolled out an innovative program aimed at educating them on road safety awareness, environmental cleanliness, and health screening. The initiative, themed “Educating and Building a Better System for Hawkers,” seeks to address the myriad challenges faced by hawkers, who often find themselves at risk while selling on the roads.
According to Madam Lina Nyarko, Founding Member of the Association, many hawkers are unaware of the dangers they face daily. “Most hawkers do not know the risks involved in selling on the roads, and it’s crucial we educate them to stay alive,” she emphasized. To this end, the Association has introduced vocational skill education, enabling hawkers to explore alternative livelihoods in areas like hairdressing, driving, and sewing.
The program has garnered support from prominent stakeholders, including Mr. Roland Steninger, Swiss Ambassador to Ghana. He praised the Association’s efforts, stating that their work embodies the collective efforts required to safeguard children’s rights. Ghana’s signing of the Convention on the Rights of the Child treaty, adopted by the United States, demonstrates the country’s commitment to protecting children’s rights, and the Traffic Hawkers Association is a shining example of this dedication. The Swiss Embassy has expressed its willingness to support such initiatives.
Mr. Felix Owusu, Planning Manager for Greater Accra at Ghana Road Safety, revealed alarming statistics highlighting the need for such an initiative. In the first half of the year, 1,273 lives were lost due to road crashes, with 304 being pedestrians. Greater Accra alone recorded 204 fatalities, with 89 being hawkers. “Our goal is to sensitize hawkers on the dangers they face and equip them with knowledge to protect themselves,” he explained.
The program’s impact extends beyond road safety awareness, as it also focuses on environmental cleanliness and health screening for members. By empowering hawkers with knowledge and skills, the Association aims to create a better system that prioritizes their well-being and safety.
As the Traffic Hawkers Association continues to make strides in transforming the lives of hawkers, their efforts serve as a testament to the power of collective action in driving positive change. With support from stakeholders and the commitment of its members, the Association is poised to create a safer, more sustainable environment for hawkers and the broader community.
