”It’s ‘Long Overdue’ – Dr Barnabas Amanfo reacts to Dr. Yaw Adutwum’s address on the state of education in Ghana
Dr. Barnabas Amanfo, Research Fellow at IFES, emphasized that the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum’s address on the state of education in Ghana is long overdue.
Speaking on Kessben FM’s Maakye program on July 30th, he shared his views on the address and his expectations for its content.
Dr. Amanfo further stated, “Although the president occasionally gives a state of the nation address, the Education Minister should regularly update the nation on the state of education, even if media houses are not always present. It is one of his duties to the country.”
When asked about his expectations, he said, “I expect the current Education Minister to start his address from when Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh assumed the position of Minister of Education, where he was the deputy minister, down to when he took over in 2021, up till now.”
Dr. Amanfo continued, “There are three themes the Education Minister must highlight. Firstly, access – Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum must explain how many Ghanaians have access to education compared to when the NDC was in power. Has there been a significant increase and impact since then?
“Secondly, he must discuss the quality of education in Ghana now. How was the quality of education when the NPP assumed power, and what have they done to improve it?”
“Thirdly, he must explicitly explain the ‘Free’ policy. Is it really free? What about the cost component that Ghanaians hear about? He must also address the curriculum reforms that have been done repeatedly since the NPP government took over.”
