Ghana Launches Innovative Road Maintenance Program
The Ghanaian government has unveiled an ambitious road maintenance program, “Enhanced Maintenance Programme”, aimed at improving the country’s road network. The program was launched by the Hon. Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, at a ceremony in Accra.
The initiative focuses on routine maintenance activities, such as pothole patching, grading, and repair of traffic signals. A Maintenance Call Centre and a mobile app, “Maintain My Road”, have been introduced to facilitate public involvement in reporting road defects and scheduling maintenance.
The program prioritizes key routine maintenance activities, allocates 60% of the road maintenance budget for urgent activities, and encourages public ownership and involvement. The call center and app will enable efficient response to maintenance requests and timely resolution of road maintenance issues.
The pilot phase will focus on main trunk roads and four major cities, with plans to address critical road defects immediately. The program aims to promote infrastructure excellence, community engagement, and citizen participation in road maintenance.
This innovative approach is expected to bring convenience, efficiency, transparency, safety, and community involvement, setting a new standard for road maintenance programs in Ghana.
