Minister Calls for Gender Equality in WASH Sector at National Forum

The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan (MP), has emphasized the need for gender mainstreaming in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector to ensure inclusive service delivery. Speaking at the National Women’s WASH Forum and official launch, the Minister highlighted the importance of integrating gender perspectives into WASH planning, implementation, and monitoring.

The forum, held at the Coconut Grove Hotel on Thursday, July 25, 2024, brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, development partners, and the private sector to discuss gender equality in the WASH sector. The Minister noted that despite women making up 51.01% of Environmental Health staff in Ghana, only 23% hold leadership positions.

The Minister called for concrete actions to address the disparities and ensure that women’s voices are represented in decision-making processes. She emphasized the need for solidarity and determination among stakeholders to build a future where every woman and girl in Ghana can thrive with access to adequate WASH services.

The forum also celebrated the achievements of women leaders and advocates in the WASH sector, with the Minister encouraging young women to take up leadership roles. The event marked a significant milestone in the journey towards gender equality and sustainable development in the WASH sector in Ghana.
