Denmark Strengthens Ghana’s Border Security With $380,000 Donation

In a significant boost to Ghana’s border protection efforts, the Danish Government has donated IT equipment and office furniture worth $380,000 to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS). The donation, handed over by Danish Deputy Ambassador Vibeke Sandholm Pedersen on July 24, 2024, aims to enhance Ghana’s capacity to combat irregular migration and transnational organized crimes.

SUPPORTING BORDER AND MIGRATION MANAGEMENT

The donation falls under the “Strengthening Border and Migration Management in Ghana” (SMMIG II) project, a collaborative initiative between the Danish and Ghanaian governments. SMMIG II seeks to:

  1. Counter irregular migration
  2. Combat transnational organized crimes, including:
    • Smuggling of migrants
    • Trafficking in persons
    • Trafficking of drugs and weapons

CAPACITY BUILDING AND INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

Denmark’s support under SMMIG II encompasses:

  1. Capacity building for GIS investigators and prosecutors
  2. Revision and development of GIS’ 7-year Strategic Plan and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  3. Refurbishment and equipping of the Document Fraud Office in Kumasi, Ashanti Region

ENHANCING GHANA’S BORDER SECURITY

The donated IT equipment and office furniture will enhance GIS’ operational efficiency, enabling them to:

  1. Improve border surveillance and monitoring
  2. Enhance data analysis and intelligence gathering
  3. Strengthen investigations and prosecutions
