Jean Mensah is politically connected and hostile towards the NDC – Hon Vincent Oppong Asamoah, MP Dormaa West

Member of Parliament for Dormaa West Hon Vincent Oppong Asamoah has said the Chairperson for the electoral commission, Jean Mensah is politically connected and hostile to the NDC.

On Friday, 19th of July, Jean Mensah, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission was invited to the Parliament House to Review the Commission’s preparation for this year’s Election.

According to Hon Alex Telleh Djornobuah(MP for Sefwi Akontombra, Majority), she gave a brief summary of the total number of registrations, which included the total number of fresh voters, special voting, and the press.

She also made mention that from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd August, registration would be opened for those who would turn 18, so that they can exercise their franchise in this year’s elections.

He further added that the filing fee, according to Jean Mensah, would be maintained_ GHc10,000 for Parliamentary candidates and GHc100,000 for Presidential candidates And 25% for people with disabilities.

Even though the budget wasn’t disclosed due to a new “Standing Order”, Hon Alex Tetteh Djormobuah ended his submission by saying both the Majority and Minority were highly impressed with the answers she gave, even though there were alot of questions from both sides.

However, Hon Vincent Oppong Asamoah (MP for Dormaa West), revealed that the Minority requested for the meeting in the first place. He mentioned that the NPP wanted to have this meeting in private, even though the general public is interested.

Even though most of the issues were addressed, there were a lot of suspicions. He explained that the major Electoral Reforms came about when NPP was in opposition, but their grievances were addressed with utmost concern, however, that hasn’t been the case with the NPP.

He further alleged that Jean Mensah, Osman Asare and the like are politically connected and are hostile toward the NDC.

According to him, what heightened the suspicion is the “2020 Elections”. He mentioned that ‘they were not consistent with the figures’. He then declared that ‘NDC is ahead of EC when it comes to figures.’ The NDC has been responsible for correcting the EC when they make mistakes with their figures.

Hon Vincent Oppong Asamoah also cited a scenario where the EC made some calculations that exceeded the hundred percent they were looking for, of which the Minority drew her attention.

He also mentioned that Jean Mensah made claims that transparency and security would be top-notch, even though she later claimed that she couldn’t promise that.

Hon. Vincent Oppong Asamoah concluded by asserting that transparency remains an issue and suggested that the Majority’s satisfaction stems from their current political advantage. The session revealed underlying tensions and suspicions between the political factions, highlighting the need for ongoing scrutiny and reforms to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.
