Africa Unites to Harness Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Development

Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy at the African Union Commission, addressed a press briefing during the 6th AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, highlighting the continent’s commitment to harnessing emerging technologies for transformative infrastructure services and clean energy solutions.
Digitalization: A Game-Changer for Africa
The African Union Executive Council has adopted the Continental AI Strategy and the Africa Digital Compact, marking a significant milestone in Africa’s digital transformation journey. These strategies aim to drive sustainable development, foster economic growth, and enhance societal well-being across the continent.
Clean Energy for Universal Access
The African Union Commission is prioritizing clean energy deployment to achieve universal energy access, promoting the Solar Policy Framework and Renewable Energy Program to support African Island States. The operationalization of the African Single Energy Market (AfSEM) is also underway, with a focus on developing a harmonized set of market rules and grid codes.
Accelerating Clean Cooking and Energy Efficiency
AFREC, the African Union’s Specialized Energy Agency, is working to accelerate universal access to clean cooking and improve energy productivity in the continent. The agency has developed a publication on sustainable scaling of clean cooking and is promoting energy efficiency standards for appliances and equipment.
Transforming Transport and Mobility
The African Union Commission is leading efforts to transform the transport sector, investing in rail transport, decarbonization, and e-mobility. The commission is also promoting the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels to support a more resilient and sustainable air transport system.
A United Africa for Sustainable Development
H.E. Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid emphasized the importance of a united Africa in driving sustainable development and economic growth. “We stand at a pivotal moment in history, where the convergence of innovation and sustainable development offers tremendous promise for Africa.
