The Unyielding Champion: A Tribute to Mr. Saabanye Basilide Kangbere

In the realm of Ghanaian politics, a giant has fallen. Mr. Saabanye Basilide Kangbere, affectionately known as “Chairman Heavy Weight,” has left an indelible mark on the nation’s political landscape. His untimely passing on June 7, 2024, has sent shockwaves throughout the country, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) mourns the loss of its dedicated Upper West Regional Chairman.

Born in the small town of Owlo, in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa district of the Upper West Region, Mr. Kangbere’s journey to greatness was paved with determination and hard work. He excelled in his academic pursuits, passing his Common Entrance Examinations and Sixth Form Examinations with distinction. His academic prowess earned him a place at the prestigious University of Ghana, where he majored in English.

It was during his time at the University of Ghana that Mr. Kangbere’s passion for politics and social justice was ignited. He became an active member of student activist groups, fearlessly opposing the Union Government (UNIGOV) referendum of the Acheampong regime. His unwavering dedication to democracy and the rights of Ghanaians played a significant role in shaping the country’s political landscape.

Mr. Kangbere’s commitment to public service extended beyond politics. He taught in numerous deprived communities in the Upper West Region, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia, inspiring countless students and leaving a lasting impact on their lives. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish several English teaching schools in Saudi Arabia, some of which remain operational to this day.

As a devoted Catholic, husband, and father of five, Mr. Kangbere’s family was his rock. His love and dedication to his family were evident in the way he nurtured and supported them, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

The New Patriotic Party is deeply saddened by the loss of this great son of the land. His tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to the party and the nation will never be forgotten. As a mark of respect, the party has directed that all party flags fly at half-mast for seven days.
