Commemoration Of 76Th International Day Of UN Peacekeepers

The Republic of Ghana and the United Nations (UN) Office in Accra will join the global community to commemorate the 76th International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on Wednesday, 29th May, 2024. The day will provide an opportunity for UN Member States to honour the memories of UN Peacekeepers who lost their lives in the line of duty and to acknowledge the professionalism, bravery and devotion of all men and women serving in UN peacekeeping operations around the world.

The 2024 International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers will be observed under the theme “Fit for the future, Building Better Together”. The theme for this year reiterates the contribution of UN Peacekeepers to assisting countries to navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace. Additionally, the UN Secretary-General’s New Agenda for Peace sets out a path for multilateral peace and security operations to remain viable tools to address future crises and conflict. The New Agenda for Peace advocates for a more comprehensive, resilient and collaborative approach to addressing present and future security challenges. Despite the challenges peacekeepers face, they persevere alongside many partners in the collective pursuit of peace.

This year’s celebration looks at the invaluable contributions the military, police, and civilian peacekeepers have made over the last seven decades. It encapsulates the spirit of progress and collective action towards creating a more equal, just and sustainable world.

A Flag-raising and Wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the Forecourt of the State House on Wednesday, 29th May, 2024, to symbolise the commitment of the Government of Ghana and its peacekeepers to upholding the ideals of the United Nations in promoting peace, stability and security. Other activities to mark the Day would include a Photo Exhibition of UN Peacekeepers and a Tree-Planting Exercise in memory of the fallen heroes.

The commemoration of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in Ghana is a testament to the country’s unwavering commitment to peacekeeping efforts and its recognition of the critical role played by peacekeepers in fostering global peace and security.
