Puzuri Group, BioAquaGarden partner for Innovative Agricultural Solutions in Ghana
Puzuri Group of Companies, a Ghanaian listed company referenced in agriculture, logistics, and construction, has entered into a strategic partnership with BioAquaGarden Ltd., a pioneering company in the field of aquaponics and integrated greenhouse systems in Malta.
The agreement aims to introduce an innovative farming approach that integrates aquaculture and hydroponics. Aquaponics, the fusion of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants in water), offers a symbiotic environment where fish waste provides an organic nutrient source for the plants, while the plants help to purify the water for the fish. This method not only maximizes resource efficiency but also reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, promoting a more eco-friendly farming practice.
Speaking during the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing yesterday at Malta in Europe, the Director of BioAquaGarden Ltd., Mr. Alexsandar Sakota, explained that the collaboration would focus on implementing his company’s Combined Greenhouse and Bio Aqua Garden system to cultivate vegetables, fruits and fishes.
Holistic approach
This initiative, he said, aims to provide a holistic and efficient approach to farming, integrating multiple agricultural processes into a single, sustainable system. He stressed that it aims to bring cutting-edge technology solutions and advanced agritech systems to local farmers, promising a sustainable and efficient method of food production.
Mr. Sakota was optimistic that these advanced agricultural solutions would tackle pressing issues related to water, energy and food security. He noted that by introducing regenerative circular economy solutions, Ghana is set to become a leading African nation in supporting and providing natural, nutritious crops.
Mr. Sakota believes that this initiative will not only benefit Ghana, but will also spread successful farming practices across Africa and eventually worldwide.
Vision alignment
For his part, Puzuri’s Executive Director, Mr. Abdul Rahaman Yahaya, shared his excitement about the partnership, saying the venture aligns well with his company’s vision of advancing sustainable agriculture and addressing critical food security challenges in Ghana.
He highlighted the potential impact of the youth training programme under the NSS-Puzuri partnership, emphasising how it would contribute to eliminating hunger and promoting sustainable farming practices. He believes that the return of backyard farming, particularly in urban areas, would be transformative, enabling cities to actively participate in agriculture.
He indicated that by leveraging innovative technology and sustainable practices, this initiative would drive food security, empower youth, and promote sustainable development across the country.
Far reaching vision
He also reiterated that the Combined Greenhouse and Bio Aqua Garden system will revolutionise farming by integrating aquaculture and hydroponics. He said this method not only saves water and space, but also ensures high yields of nutritious crops and fish. He added that the system’s adaptability to urban settings would encourage city dwellers to engage in farming, promoting food security and sustainability.
According to him, the collaboration would also enhance the effectiveness of the NSS-Puzuri partnership. “By training young people in these advanced agricultural techniques, Puzuri aims to build a skilled workforce capable of driving the agricultural sector forward. The training programme will empower youth with practical skills, making them agents of change in their communities,” he said.
He mentioned that the initiative was expected to create employment opportunities, reduce poverty and ensure food security. He indicated that it would also contribute significantly towards the realisation of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as SDG Goals 1, 2, 12 and 13.
