In-form Maduka Okoye likely to return for Nigeria in Finidi George squad
The World Cup 2026 qualifiers will return next month as teams will be playing the 3rd and 4th games for the Mundial. Newly appointed Nigeria Manager George Finidi will name his squad for the game against South Africa and Benin.
In-form Udinese Goalie Maduka has caught the attention of George Finidi as he is likely to be among the squad yet to be named this month. The Italian based goalie has kept 19 games so far in one of Europe’s top 5 leagues especially in the second half of the season.
This will mark the return of the German-born Nigerian Goalkeeper back into the Super Eagles squad since 2022 during the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon where Nigeria lost to Tunisia in the Round of 16.
The Super Eagles have dropped 4 points in the qualifiers as they drew in the first 2 games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. This has put Nigeria in a disadvantaged position where they badly need to win the next 2 games to improve their chances returning to the Mundial after missing out in Qatar 2022.
George Finidi after taking over following the departure of Jose Peseiro has vowed to return the Super Eagles back into the Mundial as he has tough task to succumb. The former AFCON winner has played two games in the dugout with a win against Ghana and a loss against Mali in March.
