Al Ahly makes 5th consecutive Champions league finals
African Champions Nady Al Ahly have qualified for this season’s Caf Champions League final. This follows their 3:0 win over TP Mazembe in Cairo courtesy of Mohamed Abdelmoneim, Wessam Abou Ali and Akram Tawfik.
In a match that involved a VAR check, the Congolese scored first as the goal was disallowed following a foul call after a VAR review. Al Ahly capitalised on TP Mazembe’s defensive lapses as they punished the Congolese after an hour mark in the game.
This means the Egyptian giants have made it into 5 consecutive finals of the Africa’s premier club competition which is historically unprecedented in the annals of Africa football.
Both clubs carried the record with 4 consecutive finals prior to the game. Al Ahly have done it twice while the Congolese did it once. TP Mazembe have been into the finals in 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1970. Al Ahly have also been finalists in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. The Egyptians replicated this feat again in the last 4 seasons. And that is 19/20, 20/21, 21/22, 22/23 and now 23/24.
Three of the finals were played by Ahly under the guidance of legendary South African Manager Pitso Mosimane with Swiss Manager Marcel Koller making it into his second finals. The African Champions will meet either Esperance de Tunis or Mamelodi Sundowns in this historic 5th consecutive final appearance in Africa’s topmost competition.
