Former Ghana coach Chris Hughton emerges as strong contender for Irish job
The former Coach of Ghana Chris Hughton has been tipped as one of the favourites to land the Irish national team’s top job. Following the departure of Stephen Kenny as Ireland failed to qualify for EURO 2024, the Football Association of Ireland made a decision not to continue with Kenny.
As a result, former Manchester United defender John O’shea was appointed as the Interim Manager on 28th February to take charge of the vacant post. With the Ireland now searching for a permanent Manager, Chris Hughton has emerged as a top candidate.
Born in Ireland to a Ghanaian father and Irish mother, Chris had 53 caps for Ireland. He made his debut in 1978 for the country as a national team. After his retirement, he has been with Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion Manager as the man in the dugout.
Chris Hughton has been with Ghana as he took the Black Stars through the qualifiers and AFCON 2023. Without impressing and after a disastrous spell in Ivory Coast, the Irish man was shown the exit by the Ghana Football Association after the Black Stars failed to progress beyond the group stages and not winning a single game.
The Football Association of Ireland in the coming days will be looking to appoint a new substantive Manager to takeover from John O’shea. Even though there has been an uproar from some Irish football fans as they claim the former Ghana Manager is not properly fit for the top job.
