Aliou Cisse extends his stay with Senegal

The Terranga Lions of Senegal Coach Aliou Cisse has signed a 2-year contract extension with the Senegalese Football Association as he is set to extend his stay with the national team.

The former captain of Senegal took over the job in 2015 after Jean Allain Giresse where he improved the Terranga Lions with different transition of players in his 9 years as the man in the dugout.

Senegal returned back into the Mundial in 2018 World Cup in Russia since 2002 under the tutelage of Aliou Cisse as he also took the Terranga Lions to 2019 AFCON finals where they lost unfortunately to Algeria.

The Terranga Lions finally won the AFCON for the first time in their history in Cameroon 2021 where they defeated Egypt in penalties and went on to qualify for Qatar 2022 World Cup after beating Egypt again in the playoffs as all these happened under Aliou Cisse.

The Lions failed to defend their title in Ivory Coast as they lost to the host nation in the in the Round of 16 after penalties. They won all the 3 group games and ended up as the best side after the group stages but unfortunately lost to the hosts after 120 minutes of football.

Initially there was a speculation that Aliou Cisse is contemplating resignation from the top Senegal job after 9 years as the man on the touchline. In a turn of events, the former captain has signed a 2 year deal to continue as the Coach of Senegal.

Aliou Cisse’s main target is to help Senegal qualify for the the 2026 FIFA World Cup which will be staged in USA, Canada and Mexico.
