Akufo-Addo, the president of Ghana, has formally opened the Borteyman Sports Complex, a cutting-edge complex that will be one of the main locations for the forthcoming African Games in Accra in 2023.
On Tuesday, the ceremony was held to initiate the 25-day countdown before the tournament.
At the occasion, President Akufo-Addo pushed the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to produce an extraordinary edition of the African Games, which is anticipated to draw more than 8,000 participants from over the continent.
He emphasized how crucial it is to give the athletes, authorities, media, and spectators who will be there excellent hospitality.
World-class amenities can be found at the Borteyman Sports Complex, which has a 1,000-seat swimming pool, a multipurpose Sports Hall, a 500-seat temporary dome for arm wrestling, judo, karate, handball, and fencing, and a five-tennis court complex.
Seven competitive sports, including table tennis, handball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, badminton, and the triathlon, will be held at the complex during the Games. Four of these events—table tennis, tennis, triathlon, and badminton—will also serve as qualifiers for the Olympic Games in Paris France 2024.
In order to ensure timely preparation for the Games, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the hybrid approach taken by his government and the LOC, which entails utilizing both existing facilities and developing new developments, such as the University of Ghana Stadium and the Borteyman Complex.
Mustapha Ussif, the Minister of Youth and Sports, praised the Borteyman facility’s contractor and consultant for finishing the project so quickly.
As a legacy for upcoming generations, he saw the Borteyman Complex as a hub for athletic achievement.
