150th Sagrenti War Anniversary: Thousands throng Manhyia for Kuntunkuni Durbar
As part of the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War between the Asantes and British colonial leaders, the Manhyia Palace is hosting a durbar.
The durbar, named after the traditional Asante mourning garments known as Kuntunkuni, is used to grieve for the more over 4,000 Asante troops who lost their lives in the conflict as well as the destruction the conflict caused to Kumasi as a whole.
So, after more than a century, Asanteman reflects on the effects of the conflict.
The Manhyia Palace’s Dwabrem grounds is the venue for the event.
Palanquin rides to the durbar grounds are reserved for paramount chiefs, paramount queen mothers, and heads of Kumasi Traditional Council Divisions.
