Be Champions Of Climate Change Actions, Media Practitioners Urged
The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR) has called on media practitioners in Ghana to utilize their platforms to sensitize, educate, and inform the general public to fight climate change.
The call was made when the Ministry organized a one-day sensitization and awareness creation on the National Green Jobs Strategy in Accra yesterday.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR), Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the Director, Policy Planning Monitoring and Evaluation (PPME) at the Ministry, Mrs. Gloria Bortele Noi, stressed the need for the media to be intentional about the impact of climate change and ensure stories are done in that line to better inform Ghanaians of what lies ahead of them.
According to her, it is imperative that everyone remains well-informed about climate change and its adverse effects on our environment and well-being to prepare us for the task ahead.
“The knowledge of the measures and strategies to combat climate change will equip us to make informed decisions, especially in matters concerning the sustainability of the environment and the labor market.
“This, I believe, will go a long way in efforts to fight climate change and its associated issues and promote an enabling environment to move from the brown economy to a green one,” she noted.
Galamsey
Mrs. Gloria Noi stated that galamsey had impacted the Ghanaian environment negatively.
She said the challenges of global warming fueled by human activities and the buildup of greenhouse gases have worsened in recent times due to illegal mining practices in the country.
“We must have a look again at Galamsey and be more proactive in fighting the menace. That will help in this all-important transition from the brown economy to the green economy for the purposes of creating more skilled job opportunities and enhancing a safe environment for all,” she assured.

Media urged to champion climate change actions

Ripple effects
The Deputy Director, Policy Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation (PPME) at the Ministry, Mr. Ernest Berko, also took the turn to educate participants on the need to use media outlets to champion climate change and its related issues for the nation.
He mentioned that the media have a role to play in the areas of education and information on job creations and job losses that are likely to occur as part of climate change and its ripple effects.
He noted that a total of 18 million jobs were created by green jobs, citing their importance to sustainability and general health benefits.
“Globally, 18 million jobs will be created, and this will boost various economies in the world. However, some jobs will be lost as well, and this stems from the move from, say, fuel vehicles to electrical vehicles, among other fields of work,” he indicated.
Opportunities and issues
The National Project Coordinator (NPC) for the Just Transition Project of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Mr. Gideon Mankralo, indicated that annually, 23 million working life years are being lost due to disasters that are orchestrated by human activity.
He, therefore, called for collaborative efforts to fight this global menace.
Mechanisms
For his part, the SNV’s Amindu Musah hinted at a more calculated agenda in the fight against climate change.
According to him, if more entrepreneurs are empowered with loans and proper mechanisms are put in place to monitor and evaluate them, it will propel the nation on a path that includes quite a number of individuals who are currently doing very well in terms of entrepreneurship in the Ashanti and Western Regions.
He, therefore, tasked the media to take up climate change issues and be deliberate in ensuring that their roles in terms of information and education yield the desired results, and Ghana wins at the end of the day.
