I will scrap it, E-levy is an unfair tax – Mahama assures

Ghana’s former president, John Dramani Mahama, has boldly pledged to do away with the onerous 1% electronic charge should he be reelected. He claims that this tax is unfair and that it impedes the country’s efforts to become a cashless society.

“it is inequitable tax, it’s not a fair tax, it prevents people from the uptake of our moving towards a cashless society and so when NDC comes, we will remove that tax. I’ve said it bluntly.

“I don’t see anything wrong with the government subsidizing access to wifi for public institutions like the University of Ghana and other educational institutions. There should be hotspots where you can go and stand and do data and then go back and relax.

“A new National Democratic Congress government, God willing, and with the votes of the sovereign people of Ghana in 2025, will repeal the E-levy Act,” the one-term former President said when he spoke at the NDC’s “Ghana at a crossroads.”

“We in the NDC do not oppose taxation as a principle. We will not be pretentious and couch fanciful slogans to condemn the principle of taxation like the NPP did in the past. We are, however, implacably opposed to distortionary and burdensome taxes like the e-levy that only force Ghanaians to endure more suffering.” He said.
