Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority spends Christmas Day with orphans at Portess village Dodowa
In a demonstration of commitment to service, scholarship, and sisterhood, approximately 300 members of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., a prominent women’s organization, have arrived in Ghana to undertake various philanthropic projects across the country.
The delegation, under the leadership of International President Rasheeda S. Liberty, landed at Portess village Dodowa on mondy morning (December 25, 2023) and received a warm traditional welcome featuring drumming and dancing.
Local NGO, Team CSR Ghana, has collaborated with the Chapter under the African American Sorority Sigma Gamma Rho (SGRHO) and African American Fraternity to make a substantial contribution to the Potters Village Shelter for Battered Women and Children at Dodowa.
The donations, which were presented by members of the diasporan sorority and fraternity alongside the CEO of Team CSR, included essential educational materials such as school desk,laptops and ultra toilets facilities and undisclosed amount to enhancing the facility’s support for vulnerable individuals.
International President of Sigma Gamma, Rasheeda S. Liberty, addressing the media she described as “Birthright Journey”highlighted that the organisation will engage in projects related to health, education, sanitation, and financial literacy in five out of the 16 regions of Ghana.
“We are thrilled to undertake ‘The Birthright Journey’ to Ghana, combining cultural exploration with impactful service projects and donations. We’re eager to connect with the vibrant communities in Ghana, leaving a positive imprint and fostering meaningful relationships. This journey is a testament to our commitment to global service and sisterhood,” she said.
She was optimistic that the delegation would leave a lasting imprint through the series of its philanthropic initiatives with abudgeted direct inflow of US$100,000. Additionally, sorority foresees a substantial cash injection of GH₵36, million into the local economy through collaborations with local vendors and suppliers.
Executive Director of the Potters Village, Nana Ama Adu-Owusu, expressed her gratitude to the groups for their donations, emphasising that they will enable the facility provide quality education to the children.
“We are so excited because unfortunately, we do not have access to laptops so our ICT lessons are always theoretical, therefore we struggle to teach them effectively, so the donation of the laptops is such a great relief to us,” she shared.
