According to data from the Ghana Health Service, 3,688 medical professionals have left the nation in search of better opportunities during the previous three years.

According to the Ghana Health Service, the number includes essential and qualified caregivers.

Poor working circumstances in Ghana have been mentioned by several medical experts who are leaving the nation in search of better opportunities overseas.

The Ghana Health Service stated that it has revised and doubled study leave for unprofessional nurses going back to 2021 in an effort to address the concerning concern. It is anticipated that by the middle of the following year, the majority of these unprofessional nurses who took advantage of the opportunity would have been qualified to fill the void.

During a debate on the Health Ministry’s 2024 budget, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader of Parliament, stated that in order to address the tendency, the government should think about increasing compensation.

“Mr. Speaker, I think that we should look at the remuneration [of nurses]. If we look at the compensation, it was over and above what was allocated and if people have left, the compensation should then climb up. We should do a proper audit of the nurses who have left to know the deficit and should be able to employ to replace those who have exited.” He said.
