I will review sports betting if elected as president – John Mahama

Should John Dramani Mahama, the former president, be re-elected in 2024, he has pledged to examine a number of taxes, including the 10% tax on sports betting.

According to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghanaians are paying too much in taxes as a result of the Akufo-Addo government.

As part of his “Building Ghana Tour” across the Bono East area, Mahama said this to the young at Techiman Timber Market and Techiman Magazine.

“I’ve heard so many of the youth talk about sports betting. It is not just about taxes on betting, when we come to government we will look at the number of taxes imposed by the current government,” Mahama stated.

The Ghana Revenue Authority formally imposed a 10% withholding tax on all wagers, games, and lottery winnings on August 15, 2023.

This came about as a result of the government’s decision to change the Tax Act and add withholding tax to gains from lotteries and sports betting.

Some Ghanaians have criticized the move, though, and some of them have attacked the administration on social media.
