The Deputy Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) in the Nhyiaeso Constituency of the Ashanti Region, Joseph Laar has suggested on a Kumasi-based radio station that the November 4 flagbearership race of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is only important because it is electing an opposition leader.
Mr. Laar while sharing his thoughts on the campaigning and other related matters ahead of the weekend’s election said, the NDC is disinterested in the happenings in that party but is only monitoring developments because they need a strong opposition leader in the next 2025 government which will be formed by the NDC.
“Ordinarily, we (NDC) will not be interested in what the NPP will be doing over the weekend. We have put our house together for 2024 and ready for victory but we just want a peaceful process to elect the next opposition leader in the 4 that have presented themselves to their delegates”
“2025, John Dramani Mahama will be the next president, that is all we care about and the good people of this country know that. Not a group of people that are ok and only preparing themselves for opposition”, he stressed.
The NDC Communicator however gave a caveat that, regardless of the outcome on Saturday, the NDC is not afraid of any of the 4 that emerges as eventual winner.
“The NDC is not afraid of anyone that wins, Bawumia or Ken, Ghanaians will reject miserably, never again in our history should we allow the NDC to deceive Ghanaians again they don’t mean well for this country”, he added
The NPP, this weekend will elect a flagbearer as delegates in all 276 constituencies including the party’s National Headquarters will vote.
In all 4 candidates are in the race after Alan Kyeremanten resigned from the party after the super delegates elections citing favoritism towards one candidate.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana is tipped as emerging as the winner but closest contender Kennedy Agyapong the Assin Central MP is said to pull a surprise.
Saturday 4th November will settle the race as to who leads NPP into elections 2024.
Over 200, 000 delegates of the party will take part in the presidential primary.
