It’s scandalous – Atuguba slams Supreme Court’s re-adjudication of Gyakye Quayson case
The re-adjudication of the Gyakye Quayson case by the Supreme Court is “scandalous”, retired Supreme Court judge, Justice William Atuguba, has said.
At a lecture Tuesday, 24 October 2023, Justice Atuguba said: “The decision of the Gyakye Quayson.
“The Supreme Court re-adjudicated the matter already decided by the High Court,“ he explained.
Also, Justice Atuguba said the Supreme Court failed to deliver justice when it nullified Mr Quayson’s election since the MP renounced his Canadian citizenship in November 2020 before the December general elections of that year.
“The Supreme Court does not stand in good light despite the clear renunciation in November 2020, whereas the election was in December, I am not able to see substantial justice in this,” he said.
He disagreed with the Supreme Court’s decision to nullify Mr Quayson’s victory, since, in his reasoning, tye MP had already clearly started renunciation proceedings of his Canadian citizenship in 2019.
Mr Quayson is currently standing trial for perjury in connection with the matter.
Despite the onhoing criminal prosecution, he won the seat again in a by-election after the Supreme Court nullified his victory and ordered parliament to expunge his name from the roll of MPs.
