‘NPP 16’ arrested for invading UTV, convicted & fined GH¢2,400 each

The Achimota Magistrate Court found the 16 irate youths who were detained by the police and identified as members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) guilty of breaking into the Accra-based UTV studios, a part of the Despite Media Group, in search of political activist A-Plus, and sentenced them to a fine of 200 penalty units each.

On October 16, 2023, they were charged with being on the property with an unlawful intent and appeared in court. They admitted guilt to the accusations, and the court later found them guilty.

In legal terms, 200 penalty units are equivalent to around GH2,400 each.

The outraged youngsters said that A Plus, actual name Kwame Obeng Asare, a regular analyst on United Showbiz, had showed egregious disdain for the NPP by tearing up on set a letter from the party raising concerns about the broadcast. This caused the show to be delayed from airing.

The popular highlife artist A-Plus should apologize, according to the head of the group that broke into the studio on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

16 of the thugs were detained after the cops intervened.

Later, it was discovered that Ernest Owusu Bempah, a deputy director of communications, and other prominent NPP members had given the thugs orders to be led by the Klottey Korle Youth Organizer.
