182,831 Voters Registered So Far In Day Six On The Limited Voter Registration- Jean Mensah
Ghana’s Electoral Commission of Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa has described the ongoing limited voter registration as successful in the midst of myriads of challenges.
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, 18th September, 2023, she admitted that although the exercise was characterized by some initial challenges, it has been greatly patronized.
“I am happy to note that the registration exercise is proceeding well. Although there were disruptions in the very beginning, we quickly moved to resolve these issues to ensure unhindered and seamless process,” she said.
The EC boss added that “Although this exercise was met with a lot of backlashes from opposition political parties and some civil society organizations, the exercise has registered a total of 182,831 voters across the country in 6 days.”
Mrs. Mensah provided the details as follows, “Western – 11,644, Western North – 6,491, Central – 17,590, Greater Accra – 27,264, Volta – 12,681, Oti – 4,427, Eastern – 19,327, Ashanti – 29,255, Bono – 6,580, Ahafo – 4,519, Bono East – 7,291, Savannah – 4,655, Northern – 12,982, North-East – 4,244, Upper East – 8,639 and Upper West – 5,241.”
“The Ashanti Region has so far recorded the highest number of registrations with a number of 29,255, representing 16 percent, while the North-East Region has the lowest of about 4,244, representing 2.3 percent. Meanwhile, more males have so far registered with the percentage at 53.9 as against 46.1% being females,” she stated.
The Chairperson expressed satisfaction with the exercise, although she conceded that there were some personnel and technical challenges at the initial stages.
“The online system broke down at some centers but this was quickly resolved. After Day 6 of the exercise, every region, except the Savannah Region recorded challenges with the registration kits.”
Madam Jean Mensah further refuted complaints that the challenges are likely to disenfranchise many Ghanaians.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Jean Mensa has assured that officers are on the ground and working around the clock to ensure that young Ghanaian voters who are eligible to register, do so at ease.
