Mauricio Pochettino confirms Chelsea stance on signing new striker

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed the Blues are still looking to sign a new striker before the transfer window closes.

The Blues made a significant addition to their forward line this summer in the form of Christopher Nkunku but lost the former RB Leipzig star, who racked up 23 goals and nine assists in all competitions last season.

To make matter worse, Chelsea remain without injured academy graduate Armando Broja, who tore his ACL in December and is still working his way back.

Nicolas Jackson, another summer signing, has led the line thus far but is still waiting for his first Premier League goal, with 20-year-old Mason Burstow the only alternative.

With Chelsea’s goalscoring woes on full show once again in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat, Pochettino took the chance after the game to admit the club are still on the hunt for yet another new forward.

“It is a difficult situation because we had two strikers in Nkunku and Broja but they are injured,” Pochettino told talkSPORT.

“It is not easy in this moment to find the right profile. We are in the process, working to see if we can add some players in this area. But it is a job that is not easy for the club. For sure, they are working really hard to add some players.

“If it is not possible, we need to wait until Nkunku and Broja will be ready and we have the help of Mason [Burstow].

“I don’t think the problem is that we need another striker. The chances that we created, we need to be more clinical. It is not only the strikers that need to be clinical in front of goal.”

The Belgian was left out of pre-season to pursue a move elsewhere but, with options limited, Chelsea are prepared to re-integrate Lukaku but would only do so with the blessing of their manager. Currently, Pochettino is not believed to be keen.
