Presidential staffer robbed at home; $114K, £3000, GHC50,000 and more stolen

Assistant Secretary Legal and Administration at the office of the President was robbed at gunpoint of huge sums of money and other valuables at her residence in the Airport Residential area of Accra, according to a case presented before an Accra Circuit Court.

The lawyer, identified as Hamida Nuhu, reported that she was attacked and robbed by a masked man armed with a pistol on March 26, 2023, around 2:04 am.

The robber allegedly took away US$114,500, £800, GH¢50,000, and €3,000 from a trunk in her closet. He also took away another GH¢2,000 and US$800.00 with unspecified amounts of other foreign currencies, as well as jewellery.

The incident was captured by a CCTV camera installed at the lawyer’s home at Premier Place. The footage showed the robber entering and exiting the lawyer’s room, while other accomplices surrounded the house.

The police launched an investigation into the robbery and arrested eight suspects based on intelligence and evidence.

The suspects are Richmond Tetteh (alias Metiti), Mawuli Heletsi (aka Mosquito), David Kokvina, Joseph Nii Amu Offei (alias Gaza, aka Hero), Malik Alhassan (alias Goliath @ Ababe), Dennis Adu Ninson (alias NAM1), Mustapha Mumuni (alias Starboy), and Zuberu Mustapha (alias One Corner).

They have all been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery. They have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The trial began on July 12, 2022, and has seen several adjournments and changes to the charge sheet.

The court has granted bail to some of the suspects, while others remain in police custody. The case is set to reconvene on July 31, 2023.

According to the prosecutor Augustine Yirenkyi, the suspects are residents of various neighbourhoods in Accra.

He said that Mawuli Heletsi was the one who robbed the lawyer at gunpoint, while David Kokvina was his accomplice. Joseph Nii Amu Offei was captured by the CCTV camera arriving at the scene on a motorbike.

Richmond Tetteh was arrested after displaying some of the stolen items at Gaza Spot. He told the police that David Kokvina gave him one of the rings they took from the lawyer as his share, but Mawuli Heletsi collected it from him by force.

Malik Alhassan was also arrested and pointed out that he gave his share of the loot to Mustapha Mumuni and Zuberu Mustapha.

He also admitted that before they went for the robbery, Mustapha Mumuni and Zuberu Mustapha gave him a substance, suspected to be cocaine, to boost his energy levels for the operation.

Dennis Adu Ninson denied the offence and stated that it was Mawuli Heletsi and David Kokvina who committed the act.

The prosecutor added that further investigation revealed that Mawuli Heletsi and David Kokvina ran to Dambai in the Oti Region after the robbery to consult their spiritual father, who is now a witness in the case, to protect them spiritually from arrest and unnatural death.

The prosecutor said efforts are being made to apprehend the other accomplices who are believed to be involved in the robbery.

The court continues to hear testimonies and evidence as the case progresses.
