2023 Green Ghana Day :Obuasi East To Grow 7,500 Trees To Combat Climate Change
Chief Executive of the Obuasi East District Hon. Faustina Amissah together with Member of Parliament Hon. Patrick Boakye Yiadom joined residents and students of Pompsoso Primary and Junior High School to plant trees to mark the third edition of the Green Ghana Day.
The Green Ghana Day was instituted in 2021 by Government, under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, as part of an aggressive afforestation and reforestation agenda, to restore the lost forest cover of the country.
The maiden edition of the Green Ghana Day was held on June 11, 2021, where Hon. Faustina Amissah led the entire District to plant 11,000 trees
The Green Ghana initiative seeks to create enhanced national awareness on the necessity for collective action towards restoration of degraded landscape in the country.
The 2023 edition of the Green Ghana Day was launched in Kumasi by Otumfuo Osei Tutu ll with a call on Ghanaians to massively participate in the planting of various tree species to sustain the environment and protect the ecosystem.
Speaking at the launch to mark the third edition of the Green Ghana Day at Pomposo School Park in the Obuasi East District with the theme: Our Forest, Our Health, the District Chief Executive Hon. Faustina Amissah bemoaned the recent destruction of the forest areas.
She said forest is one of the most important resources of our country as it provides sources of livelihood for many and generates income and also very important to the fight against climate change and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
She said so far the survival rate for seedlings planted in the last two years had been very encouraging.
Hon. Amissah praised the President for the Green Ghana Project and promised that her outfit will team up with other stakeholders to ensure that the trees planted will be properly caged to ensure that the seedlings are well protected.
The Member of Parliament for Obuasi East Constituency Dr. Patrick Boakye-Yiadom lamented the recent destruction of the forest areas.
He said “if we do not replace the depleted forest by growing more trees, how can we survive as a people “. He therefore lauded the Green Ghana Project and said it is the panacea to deal with climate change and other environmental challenges.
The Member of Parliament expressed his hope that the people of Obuasi East will contribute in diverse ways to ensure that the exercise does not burden the public purse.
Emmanuella Danbanka from the Bekwai Forestry Division talked about the preparedness of her outfit to take care and protect the seedlings once planted to ensure that the vision of the President is achieved. She said her office will put in measures to ensure the seedlings are mature very well for the benefit of the entire District.
