MOH Urges GCNM to roll out initiatives to build capacities of nurses and midwives
The Minister of Health, Mr. Kwaku Agyeman-Manu has urged management of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM) to roll out initiatives and engage in reforms to transform the college in its quest to become a specialised institution in the training of nurses and midwives in the country.
He however urged the GCNM to draw up a comprehensive framework and a policy document to create a platform for government to support the college as part of the drive to scale up the country’s healthcare delivery across the country.
Mr. Kwaku Agyeman-Manu made the call in a speech read on his behalf at the 10th anniversary celebration and fundraising of GCNM in Accra, under the theme, “A Decade of Nursing and Midwifery Specialist Education in Ghana: Innovative and High Impact Interventions Towards Universal Health Coverage”.
Government he said, will adequately invest in research, capacity building as well as fund the nurses and midwives value chain to enable the institution be abreast with the emerging issues and dynamics in the health care space in the country.
According to him, nurses and midwives as part of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) will be supported with the needed resources to enable them enhance skills in their respective fields of specialisation, adding that the gesture will help achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2063 African Union’s Agenda on health.
He expressed his gratitude to the management of the Hospital for sick children in Toronto, Canada for its partnership with GCNM which have fervently impacted on programmes, training, research, among others, adding further that the collaboration will enhance the administration operations of the college.
For her part, the Rector of GCNM, Madam Hanna Oparebea Akua Acquah urged corporate bodies to support the college in its operations and said plans are far advanced to expand faculty capacity as well as introduced new programmes as spelt out in the college’s 10 year strategic plan.
She again called on corporate Ghana to support the college of the construction of its multi office complex.
The occasion was also used to launch a research fund to support publication of journals and other reading materials as well as the launch of a scholarship fund to support needy but brilliant professionals in the health care space particularly nurses and midwives.
To grace the anniversary celebration, a birthday cake was cut amidst popping of champagne to the joy of all in attendance.
