Frank Lampard agrees to become Chelsea caretaker manager

Frank Lampard has agreed to become Chelsea’s caretaker manager until the end of the season, with the final details currently being finalised, 90min understands.

The Chelsea legend has previously managed and played for the club, making 648 appearances and scoring 211 goals for during his storied career at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard enjoyed relative success during his previous short tenure as first-team manager too, winning 52.4% of his games at the helm of a youthful Chelsea team.

Now, following Graham Potter’s sacking on Sunday, the Blues are set to turn to Lampard once again – albeit temporarily.

90min understands that the finer details are currently being worked out ahead of the legendary midfielder becoming the caretaker boss until the end of the season.

Sources have explained that the decision to search for a new temporary coach has come from Bruno Saltor’s unwillingness to continue in the role. As 90min reporetd earlier on Wednesday, Bruno is keen to stay loyal to Potter – the man who gave him a start as a coach when he retired as a player in 2019.

Key to negotiations going smoothly has been Lampard’s willingness to come back to the club where he spent 13 years at as a player.

Despite Lampard accepting an interim role, sources have said that he still sees himself as a manager and would be keen to find a permanent post, but is more than happy to help the Blues for now.

Luis Enrique arrives in England for talks

While Lampard is set to be named the caretaker manager, 90mins reported on Wednesday that former Barcelona and Spain coach Luis Enrique has flown into England with his agents for talks with Chelsea regarding a permanent managerial role.

The club have also indicated that they are set for talks with Julian Nagelsmann later this week too.
