Neymar ruled out for remainder of season with ankle injury

PSG have confirmed that Neymar is set for surgery on his ankle injury which will likely rule him out for the remainder of the season.

Manager Christophe Galtier had already confirmed that the Brazilian would not return for a while after suffering the injury in the 4-3 win over Lille in February, but there was no firm timeline for his recovery from what was initially suspected to be a simple sprained ankle.

Now, PSG have confirmed that the damage is more severe and Neymar will require surgery.

A club statement read: “Neymar Jr has had several episodes of right ankle instability in recent years. Following his last sprain contracted on February 20, the medical staff of Paris Saint-Germain recommended a ligament repair operation, in order to avoid a major risk of recurrence. All of the experts consulted confirmed this need.

“This surgery will be performed in the coming days at ASPETAR Hospital in Doha.

“A delay of three to four months is expected before his return to collective training.”

It brings a bitterly disappointing end to what had been a stellar individual campaign for Neymar. The Brazilian racked up 18 goals and 17 assists in 29 games across all competitions but it now appears he will not have the chance to add to that.

Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi will continue to lead the line for PSG in Neymar’s absence, with young Hugo Ekitike also available.

In the long term, just what this injury means for Neymar is unclear.
