Yes I do: Man, 99, ties the knot with girlfriend, 40 after two decades of dating
An elderly man in his late 90s has finally tied the knot with his girlfriend of over 20 years.
Johana Maritim Butuk and Alice Jemeli, 40, finally tied the tied knot in a colourful wedding ceremony on Saturday, an event that brought down the curtains of two decades of dating.
The new couple, from Uasin Gishu County in Kenya, had met in 2003 when Butuk was 79.
Her sweetheart then, Jemeli was only 20.
The lovebirds would then date for the next 20 years only to make things official last Saturday, 14, January.
Butuk, had proposed to her sweetheart last December and finally said ‘Yes, I Do’ and finally exchanged their marriage vows at the nearby Catholic Church.
Batuk, a nonagenarian had never married or dated in his life before meeting her current wife.
“I did not marry my entire life because I have always wanted peace of mind. I was also busy with menial jobs, but I decided to marry [at a time when] all my friends are already grandfathers.
“When I met my wife, I discovered that I found what I wanted in life. Alice talks less and helps navigate challenges in life,” Butuk told Standard Digital.
Jemeli, who met her current husband through a mutual friend, said she was in an abusive relationship before meeting her new darling.
“Many people did not approve of our marriage because they thought I was after mzee (an elderly person) wealth. But it is not true because my husband has no wealth. Compared to the young men that I dated before falling in love with my husband,” said Jelimi.
She has three children from a previous relationship.
