Al Nassr release Cristiano Ronaldo statement regarding World Cup reports

Al Nassr have denied Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract includes a commitment for him to back Saudi Arabia’s prospective 2030 World Cup bid.

Saudi Arabia are set to launch a bid to co-host the tournament with Greece and Egypt – the first ever intercontinental bid for hosting rights.

Upon Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr at the end of December, reports suggested he could act as an ambassador for the bid.

But the club have now released a statement denying such an agreement is in his contract.

“Al Nassr FC would like to clarify that contrary to news reports, Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract with Al Nassr does not entail commitments to any World Cup bids,” the statement read.

“His main focus is on Al Nassr and to work with his teammates to help the club achieve success.”

Any such involvement in a World Cup bid could have been conflicting for Ronaldo with Portugal bidding alongside Spain and Ukraine to host the tournament too.

Lionel Messi is also reported to be involved in Saudi Arabia’s bid, though his native Argentina too are in the running for hosting rights.

Ronaldo is in line to make his debut in Saudi Arabian football in an exhibition match against Messi’s PSG next week.
