The inside story of Messi’s ‘what are you looking at, you fool’: Calm down Leo, there are a lot of people from FIFA
Several brawls between players took place on the pitch in Argentina’s against the Netherlands, with some footballers still arguing in the tunnel and mixed zone after the game was over.
One of the players who looked frustrated was Argentina star Lionel Messi, who confronted Dutch striker Wout Weghorst in the mixed zone while being interviewed by ‘Tyc Sports’.
“What are you looking at, you fool? Go back there. Get away from here,” Messi told Weghorst.
Gaston Edul, the journalist who was interviewing Messi when this incident took place, tells the background story of what happened.
“At one point when we were on air I told him ‘Leo calm down’ because there were many people from FIFA and you do not know what can happen,” Edul recalled.
“After the game in the dressing room they were already arguing between each other, not just Messi. [Virgil] Van Dijk with [Nicolas] Otamendi too.
“It looked like a Lanus vs Banfield in La Fortaleza, or a Rosario Central vs Newell’s Old Boys.
“But it had more impact because they were elite players. Leo’s anger was more about what happened in the penalty shootout, when the Dutch were taunting the Argentines.
“After he went to look for Van Gaal, No.19 [Weghorst] was waiting for him in the tunnel. He approaches Messi and asks for his shirt.
