Coach Ocloo urges GFA to go for Kwasi Appiah
Assistant Coach of Accra Hearts of Oak, David Ocloo, had implored the Ghana Football Association (GFA) not to hire any of the technical men who went with Black Stars Coach, Otto Addo, to the FIFA World Cup.
According to him, they did not prove their worth and lacked the technical eye to ensure that the Black Stars sailed through to the next stage of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
“I won’t support the appointment of any of Coach Otto Addo’s lieutenants; they all failed in their duties and are not up to the task,” he told Graphic Sports in an exclusive telephone interview in Accra last Saturday.
Coach Ocloo, who was reacting to the alleged resignation of Coach Otto Addo after the Stars’ exit last Friday, suggested the re-appointment of former coaches, Kwasi Appiah and Sellas Tetteh.
“We should not go in for a foreign coach; that will be a big mistake.
“If Coach Kwasi Appiah and Sellas Tetteh are fully fit physically, we must go for them because they are well-lettered on the Black Stars and can handle the team,” he explained.
His preference for the two coaches stemmed from what he called their longstanding relationship with the Black Stars and how they could well communicate with the players.
“Kwasi Appiah knows the language of the Black Stars, he knows how to talk to them, he speaks their language and he can gell very well with them,” he stressed.
Coach Otto Addo suddenly resigned after Uruguay defeated the Black Stars last Friday and bundled them out of the World Cup.
His replacement has captured the attention of the media and pundits with some suggesting that the technical advisor, Chris Hutton, and Assistant Coach, George Boateng, must take over the team.
But Coach Ocloo, who formerly coached second-tier side, Liberty Professionals, kicked against that idea.
“They all failed together so they must all go,” he stated.
Commenting on the Black Stars’ match against Uruguay, the veteran coach chided Dede Ayew for taking the penalty kick, which he was not supposed to.
“Mohammed Kudus was the shine in the World Cup for the Black Stars. He had the lucky spirit and momentum with him and should have converted the penalty,” he said.
He also attributed the Stars’ lethargic play to exhaustion from their feat against South Korea.
“The Koreans wore us out and took a lot from us and that hurt us going into the Uruguay game,” he noted.
He said it was right for Coach Otto Addo to resign and called for a new face in the Black Stars team.
“Baba Rahman should never have started any match; he caused us a lot,” he lamented.
