How Impact Lab Ghana-UK Seeks to positively impact Ghana Medical laboratory system
Impact-Lab Ghana is a UK based Agency which seeks to positively impact the Ghana Medical laboratory system, to make it robust and duly aligned to International Standards.
This Agency is run by Mr. Anoff Anim, who is a Phd Candidate and supported by Miss Sandy Appiah Kubi also a PhD Candidate, all based in the UK.
Periodically, the Agency holds Virtual Conferences to make a Constructive Comparative Analysis between Ghana and UK labs in the various disciplines of Biomedical Sciences just to learn from the UK Lab system and tighten up ours.
The Maiden edition of the webinar occurred on the 31st of July, 2022.
Hosted by Miss Sandra Appiah Kubi with a whooping 300 participants and the speakers were;
Mr Anoff Anim (UK registered Biomedical Scientist) who gave a comprehensive presentation on the Regulation of UK labs and critically analysed the Quality Control System of UK laboratories.
Mr David Moma, (UK registered Biomedical scientist also presented on the requirements and the documents needed for International Lab Scientists to be registered by the UK Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
The Last Speaker was Mr Christian Samuel Amissah, the President of Medical Laboratory Professionals Workers Union (MELPWU) -Bono Region. He lead the deliberation on the analysis of Ghana Medical lab System, its general regulation and the challenges thereof.
The second Edition of the virtual conference came off on 5th November 2022, this particular one was centred on “Haematology and Blood Transfusion Lab Practices in both Ghana/UK”
Mr Anoff Anim, Mr Akinola Idowu Adewunmi (Specialist Biomedical Scientist) and Dr Maria Katsikogiani (Associate professor- University of Bradford) presented extensively on the subject matter and served students with all details about MSc and PhD in Biomedical Science in the UK.
After these webinars where professionals deliberated on the techniques in the lab, the suggestions below were resorted to;
- Electronic Blood crossmatching should be engineered instead of manual crossmatching techniques in Ghana Laboratories.
- Whole Blood should not be transfused to patients, rather it should be separated into RBCs and blood platelets in order to save the limited bloods gathered from donations.
- Modernised software should be deployed to monitor Quality Control System in our Ghana Labs.
- As in the UK, Lab Locum agencies should be created to run Lab Professionals in specific disciplines
