Akufo-Addo should have spoken long ago – Jantuah

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should have addressed the nation on the economic crisis long ago, a private legal practitioner Mr Kwame Jantuah has said.

In his view, the President should have adopted the approach he used during the Covid period, for the economic crisis.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be addressing the nation on Sunday October 30 regrading the economic challenges.

Commenting on this on the New Day show with Johnnie Hughes on TV3 Friday October 28, Mr Jantuah said “He should have spoken to us ages ago, he should have spoken to us the moment the crisis started. Ghanaians, we don’t feel the President as the leader.

“The moment it started, the way he was speaking to us during Covid, he should have adopted that.”

Mr Jantuah further said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is going to scrutinize Ghana’s documents and data thoroughly to ensure that they reflect the reality.

He said Ghana may pass the initial test in the negotiations but the final decision which is going to be taken by the IMF Board will be a painstaking one.

In his view, the Fund will hold Ghana to the highest standard following the posture adopted by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta prior to the decision by the government to head to the Breton Woods institution.

Mr Ofori-Ata had said on several occasions that Ghana was not returning to the IMF because a lot of measures had been introduced by the government to tackle the economic challenges.

But the government made a U-Turn to seek support from the Fund.

Accordingly, scores of Ghanaians including Former President John Dramani Mahama and some Members of Parliament on the side of the governing party, have called for the removal of the Finance Minister.

But President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said he should be allowed to stay until the conclusion of the IMF negotiations.

Mr Jantuah who is also a member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) said “when you look at where Ghana is today, our Finance and everybody, including the people who voted [the President] in into power, are saying do away with the Finance Minister, you are coming to tell us what, that we should give him time.

“So if the new Finance Minister who comes in if he does not agree to some of the things is n the budget how does he implement it. The international investors, do they have confidence in Ofori-Atta?

“IMF, do they have confidence in Ofori-Atta when Ofori Atta spat in their face and said we are not going to IMF today or tomorrow, we are a proud people, are you not sitting in front of them now?

“They will take us through the process, they work with data and the data doesn’t match up with their eyes, you might have the first lines of the approval but it is the board that is important.”
