We’re not happy to increase transport fares but it is inevitable under current conditions – Concerned Drivers
Transport Unions are to meet today, Monday September 19 ahead of their meeting with the transport ministry on Tuesday September 20 over the proposed 30% increase in transport fares by the unions.
The Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association David Agboado told Alfred Ocansey on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show that they agreed to increase transport fares any time fuel prices also go by 10%.
“We have agreed that any time there is an increase of fuel by 10% we would also increase transport fares, and accumulation of increases in petroleum prices over the few months is more than the 10%,” he said.
He noted that an increase is inevitable given the skyrocketing prices of other inputs like spare parts and cost of maintenance.
“We are not happy that we have increased transport fares twice this year and the third one is on the way but it is the condition that we find ourselves in that is pushing us that way. Some of the taxes must be looked at.
“Not that they must be scrapped entirely but they must be reduced like; price stabilization and recovery levy, special petroleum tax, sanitation and pollution levy of which we are not direct beneficiaries” Agboado stated.
