‘How many Ghanaians can afford brand new gadgets’ – 2nd sellers’ Association plead on Gov’t not ban 2nd hand items

The second-hand sellers Association of Ghana have reached out to the Government not to place a ban on the selling of 2nd hand electrical gadgets.

This follows after the energy commission said they want to cut back on electronic waste, while also preventing high energy usage of second-hand devices from entering the country.

According to the energy commission, some second-hand TV sets and other electrical appliances, consume about 10 watts of electricity just on standby mode.

With this, there have been discussions with Government to wipe out such electrical appliances in the system.

The Ghana second-hand sellers Association have expressed disagreement with the call.

They say it will be unfair to them and will also be a disadvantage to many Ghanaian as more people can’t really afford brand new gadgets.

They also added that it is not entirely accurate that second-hand electrical appliances consume more energy.

They indicated that their counterparts who sell brand-new gadgets are behind this call.

Spokesperson of the second-hand sellers association Daniel Asare addressing the media said about 25,000 Ghanaians are set to be jobless if the Government place a ban on selling of the second items.
