Black Stars technical advisor speaks highly of Tariq Lamptey

Black Stars technical advisor Chris Hughton is overjoyed that Ghana’s senior national team now includes talented defender Tariq Lamptey, who chose the West Africans over England.

Lamptey left England’s U-21 team earlier this year to join Ghana and is set to make his debut against Brazil this month.

Hughton, who helped persuade the Brighton right-back to commit to Ghana, said Lamptey is excited about the prospect of playing for the Black Stars.

According to the former Brighton manager, Lamptey is a fantastic addition to the squad and he is confident the right-back will do well.

“Lamptey came after my time in Brighton but I have seen a lot of him. I knew him at his time in Chelsea, very adaptable player. His position at Brighton has very much been as a right-back but I think in progression I’ve seen him play in other positions, in central midfield but also at Brighton in a more advanced position because they tend to change the shape,” Hughton raved on TV3.

“The beauty with someone like Lamptey is of course he’s young, he’s enthusiastic, he’s very excited about the prospect of being involved but he has a lot of adaptability on where he can play. He has pace,” he added.

Lamptey is one of six players who announced their intention to play for Ghana in June, and five of them have been included in the latest squad for pre-World Cup friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua.
