It never occurred to me that I’ll be in the position as Pele to hold World Cup – Akufo-Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed delight after receiving the original World Cup trophy in Accra over the weekend.
The gold trophy arrived in Ghana on Saturday September 3 for a two-day tour, courtesy of Coca-Cola, FIFA’s longest-standing partner, and was accepted by the president at the Jubilee House.
French World Cup winner David Trezeguet, who serves as FIFA’s Ambassador for the World Cup trophy tour, presented the trophy to Mr Akufo-Addo.
“We grew up, my generation, seeing Brazilians holding the World Cup time and time again. It never occurred to me that I will be in the position as Pele to hold the cup,” Akufo-Addo said amidst laughter.
Earlier, at a dinner ceremony held in Accra as part of the tour, President Akufo-Addo said in a speech delivered by Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare that Ghana will be the first African country to win the World Cup.
“We, who were the first to gain our freedom and independence from colonial rule, will be the first to bring the World Cup to Africa.
“I am of the firm conviction that Ghana will not only participate in the competition but will make the whole nation and by extension the African continent proud, with a great performance,” he said.
Ghana qualified for this year’s edition in Qatar and will compete in the group stage against Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay.
