I’ll be amazed if any tertiary institution is unaware of accreditation guidelines  – Kofi Asare

Executive Director of Eduwatch, Mr Kofi Asare has said that no educational institution, whether public or private , should be oblivious of the accreditation requirements in the country.

He says he will be amazed if any institution is unaware of the requirements spelt out in the books.

Speaking on the Ghana Tonight Show with Alfred Ocansey on TV3, he said “No tertiary institution in this country should be oblivious of the fact that it has to always renew its accreditation or has to always seek to obtain its institutional accreditation.

“When you are being given institutional accreditation you are taken through all these processes so I will be amazed if a private tertiary institutional or a public tertiary institution in this country is not aware of accreditation requirement.”

He was commenting on the Auditor General’s report which uncovered that the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana public universities are running unaccredited programmes.

At the University of Ghana, out of the 374 courses not accredited, 14 were Diploma programmes, 80 were Undergraduate courses, 213 were Post-Graduate courses, and 67 were PhD courses.

At KNUST, out of the 360 programmes run by the University, only 61 were accredited, 190 were sent to National Accreditation Board (NAB) for accreditation and re-accreditation with 109 yet to be sent to NAB for accreditation.

Following this revelation, Africa Education Watch called for court actions to be instituted against educational institutions that run courses and programmes that have not been accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) or Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
