The results do not back the confidence you have in Ofori-Atta – Bokpin tells Akufo-Addo

Although the President has expressed confidence in his appointees including the Finance Minister and has decided not to remove him, the results from the work of Mr Ken Ofori-Atta do not support the confidence of the President, a Professor at the University of Ghana Business School, Godfred Bokpin, has said.

He urged the President to listen to calls to remove the Finance Minister in view of the challenges facing the economy.

Speaking in an interview with 3Buisness on the sidelines of the Imani Ghana-GIZ forum in Accra on Wednesday, he said “I think that we need fresh minds, we need fresh ideas, we need a different face from the Ministry.

“I do recognize the current Minister of Finance, perhaps has done his best for the country and I think that we should be able to recognize that we are at the point where somebody also needs to continue.”

“If the president sees it differently from what the rest of us see it then that is it, but the result does not back the confidence of the president that is why I say the President must look beyond the immediate issues and look at the broader context and listen to alternative ideas,” he added.

Mr Akufo-Addo recently said that most of his ministers have worked up to expectation. He said their output has been considerable and that is what he looks at.

Mr Akufo-Addo said these when asked for his views on calls to reshuffle his ministers while speaking on North Star Radio in Tamale as part of his two-day tour of the Northern Region on Monday August 8.

“Many of them for me have done outstanding work,” he said.

“Their output has been considerable, and that is what I look at,” he added.

The president further indicated that “If the output measures expectations, then I don’t have any strong reasons to heed the call.”
