Use dialogue, not violence – ECG tells Krobo residents
The Tema Regional Branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is appealing to customers in the Yilo and Manya Krobo enclaves to use peace in resolving their disputes, not violence.
The ECG says destruction of properties and attacks on ECG officials will rather worsen the situation.
The appeal comes after some poles belonging to the ECG that transmit power to some areas in the Krobo area in the Eastern Region have come under attack.
It was discovered on Friday, August 5, 2022, that the poles were being vandalized by what ECG officials described as “unscrupulous people”.
At least one pole has been seen cut, with a logging machine.
The Tema Regional Public Relations Officer of the ECG, Sakyiwaa Mensah, in an interview with 3FM’s Sunrise on Monday hosted by Alfred Ocansey explained that “we recorded it last week Friday so we went on the field to ascertain that it was one of our high tension poles”.
“It is part of a network and it contained live wire which supplies power to Akole and Adukrom water pumps and it happened at Akuse junction. We installed another pole and power was restored on the same Friday because we do not have disturbances in these places”.
Madam Mensah explained that “you may get angry, but going ahead to destroy or kill will destroy Ghana’s peaceful nature”.
“We need to talk about the relevance of peace in Ghana. We will ensure that our installations are safe but if you lose your life because you are fighting for a course or what if you end your life in prison”.
She explained that “threat to our lives and threaten our properties but let us talk if you don’t understand anything”.
She further appealed to the media to help them educate Ghanaians on the need to use peaceful ways in resolving disputes instead of violence such as what is happening in Krobolands.
“You the media must also talk about peace. You will help us to get the information to the ground…to get to the people who matter. Those you are fighting for will have their lives after you have been jailed. Let us all learn to speak peace and use dialogue”.
Explaining why some parts of Kroboland are still without power supply, Madam Mensah said “the outage is for safety reasons”.
“We don’t know when faults will occur but when they occur, we need to move in and resolve it. We have been able to restore power to some parts but some of the people have, on their own, started connecting themselves. It is a whole area that they connected and ECG regards that as illegal connection”.
She explained that “you are not a staff of ECG, you are not authorized to connect, you don’t know the consequences, you can end up burning the transformer, you can end up causing damages to the entire area or it will cause fire outbreaks”.
Madam Mensah said “our officers have reported to the district office but they are unable to go to work because of safety issues. The place is not safe for us”.
