How “Disgraceful” Cristiano Ronaldo Tainted Man United’s Win Over Spurs By “Making It About Him”

Old Trafford was rocking as the clock approached 90 minutes on Wednesday night as Manchester United fans reveled in their side’s dominant display against Tottenham.

But not everyone was happy.

Cristiano Ronaldo, disgruntled about being an unused substitute, stood up and made his exit down the tunnel.

Naturally, the television broadcast cut from the on-pitch action to focus on Ronaldo as he grumpily trudged back to the dressing room.

Erik ten Hag’s decision to leave Ronaldo on the bench had been vindicated by a superb team performance, which resulted in a deserved 2-0 win.

But instead of being able to focus solely on good news after the game, Ten Hag was forced to answer questions on Ronaldo.

“I will deal with that tomorrow, not today. We are now celebrating this victory,” Ten Hag told BBC Sports. “I have seen him, but I haven’t spoken with him.”

Ronaldo’s decision to leave early instead of staying behind for the post-game handshakes and to applaud the fans was later criticized on BBC Match of the Day.

Host Gary Lineker said: “I’m sorry, that is unacceptable – it is so poor.”

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards agreed.

“For one of the greats of the game to do that when your team are winning, making it about him, is disappointing,” said Richards.

Fellow ex-City defender Danny Mills had earlier given his reaction live on Sky Sports.

“It’s an absolute disgrace,” said Mills. “I think that’s disrespectful to the team, to the manager, to the fans.

“They are winning 2-0. What complaint can he have?”

Mills added: “He clearly thinks he’s bigger than the football club. That’s absolutely disgraceful.”
